HP and MIL 3 Deliver Decision Support for SAP Deployment with HP OpenView Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 HP

Companies Build on Success of HP OpenView Service Simulator for Networks with Product Tailored to Optimize IT Environments for SAP R/3 Implementations

WASHINGTON D.C., Aug. 30, 1999 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and MIL 3, Inc., a leading provider of decision-support software for networks and applications, today announced the availability of HP OpenView Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3.

Based on MIL 3's popular ERP NetworkGuru for SAP R/3 software, the new simulator will help provide IT managers with visibility into an IT infrastructure's readiness to support large-scale SAP R/3 implementations. The announcement was made here at OPNETWORK '99, MIL 3's annual users group conference.

"Simulation is the only viable means to explore limitless hardware, software and network configurations to determine an optimal IT setup," said Marc Cohen, chief executive officer for MIL 3. "Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 uses powerful MIL 3 technology to deliver a tailored business solution that protects companies from the catastrophic results of failed ERP implementations. Our customers can now manage their SAP environments proactively by optimizing application performance before problems can occur."

HP OpenView Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 expands the current simulator product family with detailed application-deployment simulations. The new simulator complements current HP OpenView solutions that focus on managing other elements of R/3 implementations. Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 uses software-based simulations to assess the impact of R/3 on an existing IT infrastructure, including network applications such as e-commerce and e-mail. The software also assesses the infrastructure's capacity to support a transaction-intensive ERP deployment. Based on these simulations, IT managers gain insight into the modifications necessary to ensure a successful ERP deployment and the uninterrupted operation of current IT services. After R/3 deployment, the simulations can be used to prepare the infrastructure for new SAP modules and to identify solutions for performance bottlenecks.

HP OpenView Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 predicts the actual response times users will experience. Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 simulates transactions running through the network to the application and database servers, providing accurate details on average SAP response times. Other statistical information includes response profile predictions, including peaks and percentages of packets exceeding thresholds.

"Business users want to know two things about an IT service: Is it available when they need it? And how fast is it responding?" said Anita Manwani, general manager of HP's NetMetrix Division. "Service Simulator for Networks for SAP R/3 can provide IT with the answers to those questions before SAP R/3 deployment even begins. That makes it an extremely effective tool for ensuring the success of high-profile, multimillion-dollar ERP implementations."
