MIL 3 Introduces Groundbreaking Solution for Visualizing and Optimizing E-Business Applications

IT DecisionGuru 7.0 Provides Visualization of E-business Applications and a Window into the Future; Simulations of Internet-based Systems Essential to Optimizing Infrastructure Designs and IP QoS

WASHINGTON, DC -- January 31, 2000 -- MIL 3, Inc., a leading developer of Decision Support Software for e-business networks and applications, today unveiled IT DecisionGuru 7.0, the newest version of the company's flagship software that has been tailored for IT organizations and service providers facing the challenge of delivering networked application services. The software's groundbreaking advancements address the need to optimize the performance of existing applications as well as design robust infrastructures to meet the demands of tomorrow's e-business environments.

"We're helping IT professionals eliminate the guesswork, increase availability and reliability, and control escalating costs associated with e-business," said Marc Cohen, MIL 3's Chief Executive Officer. "IT DecisionGuru's advanced visualization and simulation capabilities enable our customers to understand the application-coding tradeoffs, infrastructure requirements and hard costs necessary to optimize the response time and availability of current and proposed e-business applications."

Application Visualization and Simulation Demystify End-to-end
Transaction Performance

With IT DecisionGuru's new Application Characterization Environment (ACE), users can easily import application traces from leading network analyzers. This allows them to break down multi-tier transactions, such as Web-based order entry, and provide a graphical representation of client, network and server interactions. IT DecisionGuru can then simulate the future performance of the application when deployed in virtually any type of infrastructure. This capability enables application developers and IT professionals to isolate the sources of potential performance bottlenecks and take decisive, confident action prior to production deployment to avoid business discontinuity.

"Successful e-business is predicated on two fundamental IT metrics: application response time and system availability," said Jerald Murphy, Program Director with META Group. "Modeling and Simulation Software, such as that offered by MIL 3, is becoming increasingly important to IT professionals who must deliver high-performance, highly available e-business services. These solutions enable users to optimize application performance and design extensible, reliable infrastructures that can contribute significantly to an organization's long-term e-business success."

Integration with Concord Network Health Shines Light on Future Performance

IT DecisionGuru's integration with Concord Network Health adds a new dimension to the software by enabling users to import actual performance data from the infrastructure that supports the delivery of e-business services. Users can access Concord reports directly from IT DecisionGuru's topology maps and incorporate the data into simulations to understand how applications will perform in relation to proposed infrastructure modifications.

"Concord and MIL 3 offer very complementary solutions. The combination allows IT professionals to leverage the wealth of historical MIB data offered by their infrastructure assets to better manage the future performance of their e-businesses," said Kevin Conklin, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Concord. "This partnership enables MIL 3 to make the most of Concord's industry-leading performance management and reporting capabilities to help companies stay ahead of user demands. Customers are the ultimate beneficiaries with the expanded ability to right-size network capacity, add resources appropriately and make informed IT purchasing decisions -- maximizing their return on IT investments."

Simulations Highlight Expected QoS, Price Tag of E-business Services

To address the demanding service level requirements of e-business applications, Version 7.0 includes several important additions to the OPNET Model Library. The enhancements include models for IP quality-of-service specifications CAR, CQ, RED and WRED, as well as an SNA-IP model for organizations whose e-business systems access data from legacy systems.

Version 7.0 also provides a costing capability that attaches hard-dollar figures to each device and link in a service proposal, assisting in cost-benefit analysis. In addition, the software includes models of wireless LANs, and a new module with advanced capabilities for modeling wireless environments that incorporate effects of terrain.

Product Availability

IT DecisionGuru 7.0 and the Application Characterization Environment are scheduled for general availability in the first quarter of 2000.
